16 PILLARS

16 Pillars is an interactive light- and sound installation which reacts to the movements of its audience. The installation registers movements in the room and processes these with the aid of special software. Within this software the audience is walking through a virtual puddle of water which they disturb just like a pebble in a pond. The waveforms that are created by this disturbance are translated into sound and made visible by moving patterns of coloured light.

ROME – 3 DREAMS OF BLACK

From the Author:
“3 Dreams of Black” takes you on a journey through three dream worlds constructed through a combination of rich 2D drawings and animations interwoven with interactive 3D sequences. Throughout various points in these dream worlds, you can grab your mouse and guide the protagonist’s point of view through the experience. This music experience also includes a 3D model creator that allows you to create your own relics and contribute to the shared collective dream. “3 Dreams of Black” is written and directed by Chris Milk, and developed with a few folks here at Google.

ANATOMY OF A MASHUP

What started as an early-aughts gimmick led by 2manydjs has since morphed into a full-blown pop-culture phenomenon with party animals like Girl Talk disseminating their name-that-sample form of music far and wide. For multilayered tracks where the original samples become indistinguishable, Web Technologist Cameron Adams developed the Anatomy of a Mashup, breaking down his own creation “Definitive Daft Punk” as an example to “reveal its entire structure: the cutting, layering, levels, and equalization of 23 different songs.”
The online visualization tool breaks down and analyzes the complicated construction, demonstrating how individual sounds work together to form the whole in a diagram of rainbow-colored concentric rings. The beautiful animation lends a unique understanding of the intricacies of the particular mashup, joining the audio and visual for experiences not unlike “little slices of synchronous art, designed to please all of your senses.”
To make that direct connection between what unfolds on the screen with the art of the mashup, Adams built the site using the latest HTML5 and CSS3 technology so that the browser renders the song as it plays and evolves for a visual that performs in real-time.
