ROME – 3 DREAMS OF BLACK

From the Author:
“3 Dreams of Black” takes you on a journey through three dream worlds constructed through a combination of rich 2D drawings and animations interwoven with interactive 3D sequences. Throughout various points in these dream worlds, you can grab your mouse and guide the protagonist’s point of view through the experience. This music experience also includes a 3D model creator that allows you to create your own relics and contribute to the shared collective dream. “3 Dreams of Black” is written and directed by Chris Milk, and developed with a few folks here at Google.

ANATOMY OF A MASHUP

What started as an early-aughts gimmick led by 2manydjs has since morphed into a full-blown pop-culture phenomenon with party animals like Girl Talk disseminating their name-that-sample form of music far and wide. For multilayered tracks where the original samples become indistinguishable, Web Technologist Cameron Adams developed the Anatomy of a Mashup, breaking down his own creation “Definitive Daft Punk” as an example to “reveal its entire structure: the cutting, layering, levels, and equalization of 23 different songs.”
The online visualization tool breaks down and analyzes the complicated construction, demonstrating how individual sounds work together to form the whole in a diagram of rainbow-colored concentric rings. The beautiful animation lends a unique understanding of the intricacies of the particular mashup, joining the audio and visual for experiences not unlike “little slices of synchronous art, designed to please all of your senses.”
To make that direct connection between what unfolds on the screen with the art of the mashup, Adams built the site using the latest HTML5 and CSS3 technology so that the browser renders the song as it plays and evolves for a visual that performs in real-time.

BANGARANG BOOMERANG

Bangarang Boomerang is Paul Lamere’s latest creation from the Echo Nest. In his blog post, Paul describes it as: “My latest music hack is Bangarang Boomerang. It is a web app (runs in Chrome or the latest Safari), that lets you ‘drive’ the Skrillex song. You can freeze-frame the song on a beat, you can make the song go backwards beat by beat, you can advance through the song at double time, or triple time, and set bookmarks to let you easily jump to different sections of the song. It is a rather fun app that lets you feel like a musician, even if you have very little musical talent. ”

BOHEMIAN RHAPSICHORD

Bohemian Rhapsichord is a web app that turns the song Bohemian Rhapsody into a musical instrument. It uses TheEcho Nest analyzer to break the song into segments of quasi-stable musical events. It then shows these as an array of colored tiles (where the colors are based on timbre) that you can interact with like a musical instrument.
If you click on a tile, you play that portion of the song (or hold down shift or control and play tiles just by mousing over them). You can bind different segments to keys letting you play the ‘instrument’ with your keyboard too (See the FAQ for all the details). You can re-sort the tiles based on a few criteria (sequential order, by loudness, duration or by similarity to the last played note). It is a fun way to make music based on one of the best songs in the world. The app makes use of the very new (and not always the most stable) web audio API. Currently, the only browser that I know that supports the web audio API is Chrome.

THE WILDERNESS DOWNTOWN

Google released a new Chrome Experiment in partnership with the band Arcade Fire titled “The Wilderness Downtown” which acted as both an interactive music video for the band and a chance to demonstrate the emerging power of the HTML5 programming technology. By drawing on data from Google Maps and Google Streetview, The Wilderness Downtown integrated visuals of the viewer’s childhood home into the narrative, creating a unique, emotional experience. Spread across multiple browser windows that opened and closed as the experienced progressed, The Wilderness Downtown redrew our understanding of how the web (and the music video) can makes us feel.
